Old Friend

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

Wednesday, January 21, 2004

I went to see an old friend today,

and this time, He had nothing to say.

I told him how much I had missed him

And how just wanted to drop by and say hi,

However, as I mused of our past

It was all I could do not to cry.

For I remember those days way back when

And how good of friends we were then.

And still I would call us that today.

However, As I sat there with my friend

my mind wandered to the distant  past

I thought of how my life he saved

And how he braved the artillery’s blast,

to pull me out of harm's way.

Oh what a friend he had been.

Yet, now I just sit in silence with him, just staring at the ground.

I tell him how I was sorry about not coming around

I spoke to him and told him how his flowers had grown

And how green was the grass upon the mound,

that just six months ago hardened clay.

I also told him that I must go

That I was leaving town

Because in truth dear friend

It breaks my heart to see you buried here

in this cold unforgiving ground.

So farewell dear friend, until we meet again

And we shall gather by that golden shore

And talk as we once talked before.

For this is the end of man

And one which I can view no more.
