The Now Silent Dead

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

Tuesday, January 27, 2004

Ash and smoke rise forth from this dismal tortured land.

As dragon slayers anew, yet not enlightened take command.

For the desert is rampant with demons from an evil past.

So let loose the light brigade, and don their armor fast.

For it was said in rushing rivers bled…

by the now silent and revengeful dead,

that to the mountains on the deserts far side

is where the dragons of evil reside.

So strike up the night gypsy’s victory band,

and let us, pray tell, give way to the task at hand.

For again, it is said, by the silent and revengeful dead,

That their slayers…with hearts of black… Have fled.

So over hill and through the villages, empty, dry and bare,

the light brigade charges on, destroying all without respect or care.

leaving children to cry and old men to die, upon a foreign kings request,

For by chasing the dragons of old away from this tormented land,

The keepers of freedom have seen what evil does best.

Yet often when chasing darkness and living where it resides,

It can even consume the best of intentions ever tried.

So why must they continue to wade through rivers bled,

Cannot they just heed the visions of the now silent dead?

Oh lost heaven’s quest.

Give us peace now……

Give us rest.

Shout the now,

Not so silent dead.
