A hole to the sky, through my roof I did spy,
That opened up to me a world of dreams.
For the stars of night, through that hole did peek,
And with their offerings of better days they did speak.
They spoke of things that were unnatural and that I did not understand,
For in the world in which I live, there is no love for your fellow man.
They told me that in the days to come, that peace and love would take a stand,
And that to love thy neighbor would be more than some left over archaic command.
Yet I dismissed these things with a simple wave of my hand,
And pulled the tattered and worn blanket higher above my head,
For in my world with holes in the roof, it is the cold I cannot stand.
Then came the approaching sun, that chased away the darkness of my night,
And through the hole above my head, I felt the warmth from its penetrating light.
Lowering the blanket ever so slowly now from over my head,
I paused to ponder dreams and things and what the stars had said.
Could it be true of what they had said, that someday love and peace would rule?
Or was it just a hopeful dream, that I in my poverties scream just want to be true ,
Can it be, in this world of kings, that they could care if I have shelter and food?
Or was it just another pipe dream swirling in my head, as I lay shivering from the cold, and almost dead.
Yes, shivering from the cold …
and staring at the hole in the roof.
Waiting,
Wanting
