His Gift to Me
I was given by Him, what I should call a gift.
Something that came later; was not there at birth.
It was an appendage, I added on or inherited.
With a passive disposition, in the midst of activity,
In the company of superiority,
I grew before the gift came.
Became anonymous.
Lived in envy and insipidity.
Then I broke free and found legs to stand on.
I stood up erect.
I then, decades later, received the gift.
It came wrapped up, mysterious:
A readiness to weep at the drop of a hat.
