Chickadee
I know a loyal little friend
with pluck and courage to contend
with bigger birds who want the seed—
and these small friends I love to feed.
They're lively, full of pep and zing,
with vim they flutter feathered wing
and hop from branch to trunk to ground.
All through the winter's cold they're found.
Their caps are black, their jackets gray,
they titter through the bush at play.
Their downy chests are snowy white,
their song is chipper, droll and bright.
The one more dear than other birds
who visit, peck, and sing soft words,
this little friend, most sweet to me—
the simple, sprightly chickadee.
