a thought that got stuck in my head from a comment made a few times recently. maybe it should have stayed in my head lol .

june 5, 2013

Kneeling on the slope eighty feet high
rock hammer in hand, covered in dirt.
Been there for hours but no one knows why
passersby wonder maybe hes hurt.
Traveling around as many try
but no tourist, hes searching in chert.
Some see his habit as odd they reply
not sane in the head others extort.
He knows more about things long gone by
than whats happened close in news reports.
But if hes asked to say who am I
he will shrug his shoulders and retort.
"No one special at all just a guy
who enjoys this rock hunting for sport."

I think he can talk for days about the beauty of the rocks he find, about the excitement when he finds a specialty. I sounds very interesting to me.

Ahh my grandmother was what we called a rock hound...
she always brought home various "rocks" and also fossils...
I always enjoyed seeing what treasure she had for me to see next...
Thank you for the vision of this man hard at work...

A certain peace comes
from doing what one loves,
and your poem captured it

Poem that captivated my heart Budd... Mountains.
Sun light flickering on rocks or...snow flakes
in winter...fertile valley below and above
....only sky...so easy to reach...when standing
on the edge...reveling in true beauty.
Aaaaaah!...An exquisite life! Truly exquisite
poem to celebrate it!

I like the image eeof the rockhound. For sure

" He'd better He knows more about things long gone by
than whats happened close in news reports.

Otherwise he will be clueless as to what to look for, and have no idea if he finds it.

For so many, the joys of simplicity have all but eroded, not unlike the fragmented pieces of time's greater beginning you've found on the mountainside.

Nothing wrong with rock hunting. You might find a rock worth thousands of dollars or you might find a fossil. Then again, it's good outside activity––healthful activity.

The poem is not bad either––and you are not crazy. In fact, rock hunting is saner than being a tourist, voyeuristically poking your nose in other cultures.

Not a rock hunter, but I can understand why it would be a good thing to do. Enjoyed the poem.

Fossils, rocks, and arrowheads are favorite hobbies of mine! My folks took us hunting for years and we have quite a few treasures from being rockpeople...lol

There is nothing like rock hunting and finding treasures from the earth, except when you come across a rattlesnake! Lol...
This piece made me think of danger, challenge, yet cares of the world, lifted from my shoulders.

My favorite findings are the Ammonites!

'Digging it' has so many different meanings today!
