for our furry friends at Massanutten where Mary and I go the week before memorial day every year. this was last week

Whip por will, whip por will peeeled in the dark
who whos, who whos entones in a chorus.
Whip por will among some chirpping remarks
a late night serenade played just for us.
When dawn friends arrive out of the forest
the vixen sitting pretty at its edge.
Joined by three a last peek before they rest
then a does breakfast walk along the ledge.

Squirrels scamper from limbs to ground to limb
as a ground hog slowly wanders around.
The skunk appears with no concern of them
or the morning song birds that now abound.
These days go on as clouds drift on the breeze
wafts of pine, cedar and fir in the air.
Until dusk when all come again at their ease
their forage, their play with us they share.

The vixen back with her two kits
and her three companions not far behind.
A doe watches what one fox eats and sits
she nears, he moves, she nears, he moves in kind.
Skunk mingles with the foxes, no harm, no foul
a new skunk the first sends off, tail unwound.
Then the dusk goes to dark, no more they prowl
whip por will, whip por will the only sound.

I really like this one. Good language, doesn't get in the way of the images.

I forgot what it felt like to be in a forest--all the sights and smells. Now I'm craving a hike in the woods!

An honest image of the many colors of Nature's surroundings. This is the 3rd poem I've read today celebrating Nature. Must be something in the air, eh?

You have shared the "natural" experience most vividly and effectively through your verses, Budd. Love and peace,

I think that Ed Kostro would have liked this, but unfortunately he is not on anymore, so I like it for him and double for myself...-e-

Beautifully written of a beautiful experience. There's nothing like nature to reset our sense of purpose in the world. Unfortunately, for millennia, we had to kill these animals for food.

This has GOT to be a sight to behold!! Your imagery makes what I see in my mind into 3D (if anyone remembers that one! lol). You have painted a perfect picture with your words.

Love ya!

IT'S IN THE HEART, ISN'T IT? I MEAN YOU HAVE TO HAVE A HEART FULL OF THE LOVE OF NATURE TO APPRECIATE, TOUCH AND THEN RELATE TO OTHERS THE PLEASURE OF BEING IN THEIR COMPANY. WONDERFUL IMAGERY, GREAT PROSE AND STYLE...THANK YOU FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH TO YOU AND YOURS...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

Sounds like the perfect setting for writing. Not saying that I'm much of a writer, but you have made me want to be there nonetheless. Fine job! I enjoyed it immensely!
