Ode to The Masters
By Scott D. Zachary ã 2003
Not much older than a mere tot, John D. hooked me with Travis McGee. No more literary pleasure could be got; I often fantasized I was he.
The man who monopolized my bookcase, No others could give me solace. The only author who ever made me cry, MacDonald inspired me to try.
For a score of years, I refused to believe— Any other writer could give me reprieve. Then one day, I suddenly found— None of his books around!
Disgruntled, and with much chagrin, I decided to settle for another. At a loss for where I should begin, I asked my good friend’s mother.
Sally used to read a book a day, So I thought, "Perhaps she’ll show me the way!" She said, "If it’s adventure you yearn, When it comes to authors, you’ve got a lot to learn."
Feeling doubtful and remiss, I skeptically listened to her suggestion. Sally said, "If it’s MacDonald you miss, I have a cure for your literary indigestion."
"Dean," she said. "He’s the man to be tried." And Sally added, "His mentor and yours coincide." Along with a rush of adrenaline, her words gave me hope; Any author who’s mentor is MacDonald, is no dope.
"My recommendation is "Seize the Night," she said. So I snatched the book from her hand and read. The more of Dean’s writing I ingested, The more my anxiousness rested.
In my opinion, John D. MacDonald is still the best. But now there’s another who’s not included in "all the rest." Today, Dean Koontz inspires me, too! After all this, I’ve got to go to the loo!
