Chains

You intrude upon my dreams,
presenting the qualities that
defined you years ago.
You reject and abuse.
You degrade and disregard me.
You leave me for someone
more appealing.

I dread sleep because I know
you will enter my subconscious
and rob me of my joy.
It has been eighteen years
since we parted ways.
Why do you still thrust yourself
upon me?

I awake crying, until I
comprehend the rescue of reality.
Relief fills me up and I weep
from gratitude.
But, why are you there?
We live separate lives, yet
you continue to impart your madness
and cruelty upon my private hours.

I assumed I had let go
and made a choice to forgive.
My lucid feelings for you are
empty and void of emotion.
So why are you habitually persistent
in forcing your evil nature into
the darkness of night?

I pray to God that you will
leave me alone this night.
That my rest will be soothing
with rivers to wash away your image.
With green grass and flowers.
And transparent trees that do
not hold a place for you to hide.

Release me, oh Lord from these
debilitating chains.

One of your best, Janet. I don't think I've ever seen a better penned poem of hurt and love.

Startling, stunning, strikingly well-written, Janet: so lucid and devoid of decoration - you let the feelings and facts speak for themselves. The result is extremely powerful and, whether or not we have "been there" - you take us into this haunting realm of reality. I can only echo your prayer with a heartfelt Amen, and know that with God, all things are possible. There is maybe some kind of spiritual "root" that needs to be addressed, rather than it just be a cogniscent act of forgiveness and letting go. Doubtless you ask for wisdom and insight about such matters from those who can help you with this. Release can come instantaneously once we have found "the key". Bless you, love and prayers. Kate xx

This is stunning in its impact on the emotions. I'm thinking the chains that bind you to this man, also bind him to you. It wouldn't surprise me in the least to learn you haunt him as much as he haunts you. Eighteen years is a long, long time.

*Chains*, beautifuly crafted, is a very strong piece in which I think everyone who reads it will be gut punched.

A chilling invasive presence in this beautifully written poem!
Janet I went through some years of this after leaving an abusive husband. This may be just fine poetry on your part, but you do it
with knowledge. Very fine work!

Some of us are tortured by our past relationships forever I guess. It seems unfair that we should not be granted escape from the past in our dreams....instead it appears your past haunts you endlessly including in your sleep. A haunting write Janet. Very sad.

I have been there and I think sometimes when we have a relationship whether based on lust or love and we are left behind we never truly get over it, wonderful way of putting it you have.

Sad and powerful. My ex-wife, for many years had a power over me until I prayed for her. I gave that power to Someone with more Power. God Bless...
