Excellent! A person who is completely herself and happy in her own skin, by the sound of it! My hat is off to her. I worked in Stuttgart for several months many years' ago, and I can picture this persona well - and relate! Not cold, but able and content to know and be as one chooses. Think perhaps it is the chaps who can understand this character-type more than us girlies! We tend to be more (European) Gallic or Latin, perhaps - even some of us Nordic phlegmatic Brits! Beautifully penned portrait of a woman and her memories. As others have said, I too really like the last verse....the icing on the cake of Irene's life.

I like Sandie's answer to this remarkable poem, and in the last verse, "solitary satisfaction, hints that she is content with her life. I hope so at any rate.

Memories, good memories can give you that calming effect, and I hope Irene has those to contemplate. Reminds me of the old David Allen Coe song, "Hello In There."

It is sad how some seniors are so alone at the end when they have shared so much in youth and gained so much knowledge that will never be passed on.

The quality of life is of one's own perception. Most often we like to judge others how they live and then try to determine whether or not they are happy, when in reality, it's the person's very own perception of happiness and contentment that counts.
