Sonny is dying.
The last days for my old
high school friend.
I grieve my loss even
before it has come to be.
He was a nerdy kid who
didn’t fit in.
So he set off for college
and points west.
Oregon, where he felt
more at home with nature
and a hippie lifestyle.
A free spirit man
who danced around fires
and called up spirits.
Sonny’s theology was layered,
concocted of bits and pieces,
philosophies, myths and legends.
But among his collections
of icons in his prayer room
is a silver cross that I sent him
from Budapest.
It symbolizes
his belief in Christ
as God incarnate.
Soon he will be welcomed
into the fold
and he will be bathed
in the light of the lamb.
This touches me so deeply Janet - and especially so now, obviously, with the demise of my mother. It is at such times the whole relationship dynamic comes under close scrutiny and the reality of its foundations and interchange is assessed and valued, perhaps. Whatever... it is in the giving and receiving of love, however felt or expressed, that makes all deeply-founded relationships so special and so enduring... even more so, perhaps, those that we make by choice and not just because of vested familial links. This is just beautiful and a true reflection of sharing and touching souls. Always hard to lose someone who we have spent that many years getting to know and appreciate.....I'm sure the silver cross means a great deal to him and he will carry the spirit of it, and his other religious icons with him as he moves on to his next great adventure. Lovely tribute to a long-time friend.
