Avast ye maties, I am heading home...

Giving wide berth to icebergs, Heading in a sou’westerly direction, Sailing home from Finland, Where I purchased this finely built craft, Forty two feet of ocean going Kevlar, For an emergency I got also a six person raft… Sailing into the sunset, Two diesels & one solar powered electric, She is a hybrid, she will surely get me home, don’t fret… Just me makin’ this trip, All power, no sails to rip, My hands on the wheel with a tight grip, Followed into the lanes a container ship, Now I am on my own, Maybe when I reach warmer waters I will take a dip…J

A great fantasy that could be a reality. I have a friend who bought a sailboat in Denmark and sailed it to California through the Panama Canal. I also had the opportunity to be half owner of a 32 foot wooden folkboat in the San Francisco Bay Area when I could afford it. I passed on the idea because I couldn't fully participate in maintenance and sailing because I was paralyzed. My partner bought the boat alone anyway and allowed me to be at the tiller as we sailed around Alcatraz and Treasure Island one foggy night. I slipped on the ribs of the hull and ended up flat on my back on the bottom of the boat, tillerless. The boat sailed on without me.

There is no greater feeling than having the boat surge through the water with the silent power of the wind pushing it. Modern hybrids may make long-distance sailing more comfortable and safer, but I would prefer roughing it like the Vikings did.
