Think Libya. In and out in 7 months. No boots on the ground. No casualties. No costs (we still hold $38 billion of Gadaffy's stolen assets). On dictator pushing up daisies. An entire country free to decide its future. Probably the most perfect war ever fought. Where is your memory? Hooray for the USA!
I don't want war either. Too many in Syria have died already. What is needed is a police action. When two gangs are fighting it out in the streets of Newark like Hatfields and McCoys, what do we do? We send in state police or US marshals, the FBI or whatever is necessary to stop the bloodshed.
I think the threat of a strike alone will deter any further chemical warfare by the Syrian regime. And, if a strike is required for the regime to get our attention, we won't have to go to war to do it.
There's a big difference between this situation and Vietnam.

As far as Syria goes, the military options are all bad.
-Shipping arms to rebels, even if it helps them topple Assad, would ultimately empower jihadists and worsen rebel in-fighting, probably leading to lots of chaos and possibly a second civil war (the United States made this mistake during Afghanistan’s early 1990s civil war, which helped the Taliban take power in 1996). Taking out Assad somehow would probably do the same, opening up a dangerous power vacuum.
-Launching airstrikes or a “no-fly zone” could suck us into war, possibly for years, and probably wouldn’t make much difference on the ground.
-An Iraq-style ground invasion would, in the very best outcome, accelerate the killing, cost a lot of U.S. lives, wildly exacerbate anti-Americanism in a boon to jihadists and nationalist dictators alike, and would require the United States to impose order for years across a country full of people trying to kill each other. This is not a viable option…
- Pray for Peace – This is the only reasonable option. All sides are wrong with their methods of waging war and for the most part their reasons behind wanting war. Many countries on earth live peacefully with opposing points of view. At this point our nation is one of them. We can’t learn anything from Syria and they are not willing to learn from a Western style democracy.
