The Spoken Word…

English was once a beautiful language,

So much so that many a story was written & spoken…

Then came the 60’s, with its turbulence & strife,

Causing the “curse” word to become a way of life,

The 70’s just made it worse,

The 80’s & 90’s brought cursing into mainstream,

But with the new century, cursing has become the norm.

Radio stations, TV, movies, theatre, & such,

Now even our youth curse so very much,

Sure they don’t do it ‘round mom & dad,

But mom & dad do it so often ‘round them,

They don’t see it as bad.

Music and the arts, have proliferated it to a great degree,

But we can’t blame anyone but ourselves,

Yes, we all are to blame, for our children’s lack of self- restraint,

We tell them they “shouldn’t,”

Then do what they “shouldn’t” & expect them not to do so.

All these words, while they may be quite descriptive,

Cannot hold a candle to words used in the same respect,

From writers such as Shakespeare, Thoreau, & Milton to name just a few,

Is there anything to be done with this rising problem?

       Maybe with the next generation we can start anew?      

  Or go back to a better time?

               I only wish…
