Before writing, everything was passed on verbally, including oral histories that went on for generations and were memorized. By using rhyme schemes and perfecting the wording, these long histories could be memorized in each generation, added to, and modified according to the speaker.
The drunk speaks from his unbridled mind. While the poet speaks from experience and understanding. But there is never anything better than a drunken poet. Like when the drunk broke into song, "Waltzing Matilda," in the movie, On the Beach. The song said so much.
