I let a thought lie on my lap,

As I in my mind I wandered.

There are gems in words

That are so easily lost.

So many times I slumber,

As words are lost through sleep.

I never can recall them, never.

Poor am I a writer, no recall have I.

Maybe they will be remembered,

But not in the intent needed.

Words can lose their meaning,

Though they seem to be the same.

I can sense the difference

When a thought is deprived.

One word has meanings within

As to its intent when proferred.

You have hit on two profound observations. First, we do not commit words to memory very easily. If we put them down for a moment, they will surely be lost in the distraction of other things and thoughts. The other is one that affects poets greatly. That is when we write words that have a particular meaning for us (unless we are writing gibberish or nonsense), but, because the words may have many meanings, the reader often mistakes the meaning in the poem for something else altogether. I like to think the more diverse others' understanding of a poem the better. If the poem is fully understood the same way by everyone, it is not much of a poem.

Dear George - you must be lonely. We all are to a degree. So go out and meet someone. Be in good company and you will be good company. Amen!
