"Come quick hun,"
David called to me
as I sat at my easel
absorbed in my painting
"The milkweed has blossomed
and a Queen Monarch butterfly
is laying eggs on its leaves"
Together we watched in awe
as an elegant orange and
black speckled monarch beauty
fluttered and flirted with
her favorite flower
The Monarch butterfly sadly
and unfortunately is
on the extinction list
so we humans have all
been encouraged
to plant milkweeds
so that we don't lose
these gorgeous creatures
David has taken up the call
this is his second milkweed plant
please everyone
plant milkweeds!
Long live the Monarch Butterflies!

We thought that milkweed and monarchs would live forever in those fertile pastures along with Canadian thistle and other fun things like puff balls we would stomp on.
I never put pesticides on my lawn and now I leave my entire backyard side yard grow in the spring until about May before I cut it down because so many creatures depend upon those so-called weeds for their existence.
