The Hummingbird

I wrote this before I ever saw a hummingbird. They are *beautiful* creatures!

One hummingbird I saw today,
In solitary flight;
A single bird alone at play,
No other bird in sight.
A lonely bird, whose only prey,
Was nectar's sweet delight.
It hovered high and seemed to pray,
Then darted to the right.
Its wings a rapid blur of gray,
Its colors bold and bright.
It sought a place where it could stay,
Somewhere it could alight;
A place to rest -- a brief delay,
No matter just how slight;
But failing that -- kept on its way,
Relentless in its plight.
It slowed -- and looked upon the day,
And startled, sat upright;
And suddenly it flew away,
In fear of coming night.
