Count Bartholomew's Lament

by Jeff Mason — Read all 207 poems by Jeff Mason

My entry into the saga - this would be before Bartholomew decides to be so bold as to propose a truce and a 'bonding' with Leila. Would like to pen another short story entry to the saga, but life intrudes.

To read the entire saga, Click here and follow the trail, from "Blood Lust" and beyond. These are all VERY short, so you don't have to worry about investing much time. And truly a literary treat for this Halloween time of year!

Count Bartholomew's Lament

Darkness now fills my veins,
No warmth in me remains...
Yet thoughts of her do haunt me still,
I long for her to want me;
My mind complete with her I fill.
Her eyes forever taunt me.

The thought of her; a devilish thrill,
Her hair ablaze like open flame.
To hear her voice, my heart be still,
Now I shall never be the same.

She binds my heart in heavy chains
Of passion’s fevered grasp,
Of myriad pleasures and of pains,
As breathlessly I rasp.

The world to her I'd gladly give,
If she'd but have my hand.
Each breath she takes is mine to live,
For only she could understand…
The power of her hold on me;
Her every wish is my command.

My breath she stops with every glance,
There's nowhere left to turn.
Is Leila but my final chance?
In Hell, will my soul burn?

Brief, as compared to the other entries in this story, but very much to the point and very smoothly written!

Bravo, Jeff! I was wondeering when I'd next see an entry from you (especially since you're one of the prime movers who started the Challenge...!) And it was WORTH waiting for! There is much that is bnoth bittersweet and self-flagellating in this look into Bartholomew's mind and motivations! He loves, yet he regrets loving, he has her, but he truly does not... excellent counterpoints!

Wonderful addition, lets us see deeply into the Count's heart and passions. The characterization is fleshing out, The plot thickens! I agree about the language, it's true to the antiquity of these beings, Leila is actually the only new Childe.

Thanks Richard, for your comments. Remember, these are VERY
OLD vampires, vampire slayers, etc. These are people (or beings)
who were truly ensconced in the language as it was in the
"era of vampires". The anachronistic nature leads to credibility
and to a refreshingly pleasant flow. To me, in many cases, such
a presentation is a much more passionate rendering of the words;
especially in keeping with the particular genre at hand.

Hi Jeff!

This is a lovely poem, indeed.

My only concern is with your inversion of normal English word order, which CAN lead to anachronistic style in contemporary 21st. Century poetry.

For instance,

My mind complete with her I fill.

strikes me as oddly 17th. Century.

Perhaps it is just me.

Very compelling, neverthless.
