Requiem for Proclivity (with Al Swanson)
by Jeff Mason — Read all 207 poems by Jeff Mason
Al Swanson tossed me a bucket of thoughts and I refined them and gave them a title. Make no mistake: Al breathed life into the bucket; I merely touched the waters of the bucket where the ripples led. This is the result. Sometimes in life, we look back and think, "I could have taken the high road of riches and opulence, but I prefer being down-to-earth, where I value thoughts and feelings over material things." Hope you enjoy this collaborative effort. -- Jeff and Al

I imbibed proclivity
for all the elegance I could endure;
I loved cryptically…
and more
to walk
cold snow
felt fields
and soft timber
hanging there
spiked remembrances
that seasons shall not last
ever and ever
For all ability
to lift
high above the clouds
I preferred the shifting sands,
the ground,
and there beneath
where soft light fell
tender;
no relief
save companions of worms
their eyes open wide to chatter
constant understanding
It was not luxuries I suffered
nor planes and big cars
nor pools swum
nor so many glittered tables
set like the glimmering seashore;
not those fine means,
but the visions kept sure
to treasures understood,
valued more;
to be handled, graced, and reckoned
more supreme
than the gloss
of any shimmering dream
All things shall settle: lowest proclivity
and the best
not always high
but beneath;
the drumbeat maintaining silence
sure
and listening
to only some

There is a magical little old book, "Hind's Feet On High Places"
that is the extraordinary journey of a woman learning that the key to authentic heaven on Earth is discovering bliss in "going low".
Well done here! Vicky
