Victim of Circumstance

by Jeff Mason — Read all 207 poems by Jeff Mason

Originally written 1984, revised 2004 ... 20th anniversary of this creation; why not?

Wednesday, January 21, 2004

I had begun to ... hope that I had found something,
but what I had found
did not turn out to be
what I had hoped for.
Or it truly was, but…
reality crept in,
and circumstances on both ends
made clear that things should remain... detached.

Maybe, in some unseen ways,
what I had found, turned out to be
even more
than what I ever
could have hoped for.

Blessings in disguise.
Disguises that are thin.
Thinnest veil
that can often be removed,
with adequate effort.
Effort that, under current circumstance,
proves futile.
Effort that, in another place and time,
in a different situation,
would be more than worth the attempt.

It is human nature that we often idolize
the things we know
that we can never attain.
But... it is all for the best;
always... for the best.

We all make choices in this life.
We must live with the choices we’ve made.
We acknowledge those choices, but…
We don't necessarily have to like them.

Sometimes, we take the path of least resistance.
Hindsight is everything,
when foresight should have prevailed instead.
Sometimes, we make choices that sustain us,
for a time.

Those who never have experienced
our specific trials and tribulations
relate in only small ways,
trying to push for repair,
where some things are beyond repair:

Ever hopeful, ever kind.
Patch the wounds;
ties that bind.
Lay the bricks, tread the water.
Mix the mortar, build the wall.
Choke back the tears of consternation.
Just go on: you WILL survive!

Yet the one
who possibly feels
the same passion and bond,
and could reciprocate,
instead allows circumstance
to dictate
for them as well.

Therefore, when all is said and done,
there is but one truth
with which we know we must live:
We are all
victims
of our own
circumstance.

You've nailed this one right. Very well developed -- good thought process. Yes, hindsight is 20/20; it is also safe. Foresight is risky. Great job, Jeff.

Jeff, this is outstandingly well written and very well thought out! A very emotional, meaningful and intelligent cogitation on the mechanics of Fate! Your personalization of the many and varied paths of circumstance/destiny makes the read immediately accessible to even the casual reader! Top-notch!

Jeff, there is a great song by Delbert McClenton, and written by Vince Gill, titled, Victim Of Life's Circumstances" you should give it a listen. I don't much care for country, but it is good, as is your poem.
