A father's view of his little girl growing up.

 Just The Other Day

Just the other day she was a little girl at play

and I wished that it could always be that way.

I held her in my arms and protected her from harm,

and I hoped that she would never slip away.

Just the other week I gave a kiss upon her cheek

as I held her oh so closely to my chest.

Then she hurried off to play, and I watched her skip away.

It's sure hard to watch your baby leave the nest.

In just a few more weeks we barely had a chance to speak

and I told her that I hoped that she would stay.

But my little girl had grown, heading out all on her own.

I guess I always knew we’d reach that day.

Just the other month I think I saw her only once

and I’m really having trouble letting go.

So I called her on the phone, but it said she wasn’t home,

so I left a message just to say hello.

Just the other year I had to shed a little tear.

It’s amazing that our time goes by so fast.

We all have our lives to lead, I'd just like a slower speed

and a way to make the time together last.

She's my little girl no more, but those memories I store

as I hold on to that baby selfishly.

And although we've grown apart she is here within my heart

where my little baby girl will always be.

Once the father, always a father. Let us hope she will be at your side when you are in your greatest need. For you were there for her until she no longer needed.
