“Coughing Up Roses”
I know that,
Whenever you speak,
Your words are sweet summery winds
On the nape of my neck
And, they seep down, through my garments, my skin
Into my hungry, wild, anticipating heart
See and feel the emotion of this place, and space
Grassy fields—
The grass whirling about them
Along with the cloud softened blue heaven and sunshine
They can only be together,
Like that…a little while
And…your words
With me
Too
I dream...and dream, and dream
I look naïve, and actually am very cloudy
Always, I carry this burden, an uncertainty of my purpose
There is no other way, I think
However, if I know anything of anything
I always love you
You could say whatever, whatever—whatever
I will only hear the quiet rustling of the dust you stir
And…the leaves and grass
The small…elusive things
I listen…and…I look
I know that,
Whenever you speak,
You strain a little, and
You bend some; always, you meet with me
Wherever low I am,
And…I go
In this tiny little place we call,
Universe
I am selfish enough to overlook it, though
And continue my blissfulness—Euphoria,
In the sunlit haze—piercing rays, through lush green trees,
Their fluttering leaves—haunting,
Wavering light and shadows
Hear the chirping birds and buzzing bees; and, their likeness
I can feel the laboring ants mine and scurry the coveted dirt,
And the wispy kisses of butterflies, as they propel and fly
By, brush my skin—I like this
No less,
I know that,
Whenever you speak,
You are
Coughing up roses,
For me
