I think I could do with a break!!

BORDER CROSSING

Between Intention and Accident
there's a long and winding road
that is often taken - though seldom chosen
- by which inevitably the twain shall meet.

That road is therefore a bridge,
the fast-flowing waters of Truth passing swiftly beneath.
Past lies downstream, future upstream;
so what is then a "done-deal" and what remains
yet an option
depends on which way you happen to face.

* * * *

Hostages from both countries meet in the middle.
And embrace.
They cast their bread upon the waters,
the drowning man clutching at straws;
the rational man knowing that excuse will not save him.

But between Intention and Accident, borders have been crossed
and emotions have been trafficked.
Midway, in No Man's Land,
refugees of the heart are camping out,
hopelessly repairing or tearing down walls...

On the bridge, though, there is still choice:
Forwards or backwards? Upstream or down?
But there also, midstream, the bridge is nothing more
than a sandbar lapped by imperious waves.
Remaining the same is not an option.

* * * *

So there is no chance of standing still,
no such thing as "middle ground".
We either expand or contract; compete or capitulate.
The status quo, the sandbar,
is a steadily disappearing foothold.

And the cities of Intention are being populated
by the victims of Accident:
When the sandbar finally disappears
we no longer have a choice.

Intriguing, highly philosophical and thought provoking. Ultimately, no one can sit on the fence forever. Your butt starts to hurt and split.

profoundly wise perspective ... when the sandbar disappears we can either sink of perhaps decide to float above it ...

Powerful in-depth prose you paint a word picture of
humanity in the ebb and flow of life finally forced
into meeting in a huge embrace...

which seems to be imminent...Superb write!

The entire piece is profound, Kate...but...these lines top
it off with grandeur:
"And the cities of Intention are being
populated by the victims of Accident."
Beautiful.

Kate, I could spend hours just following streams of thought conceived while reading this poem. I especially like the first stanza,
"Between Intention and Accident
there's a long and winding road
that is often taken - though seldom chosen
- by which inevitably the twain shall meet."
also the following,
"So there is no chance of standing still,
no such thing as "middle ground".
We either expand or contract; compete or capitulate.
The status quo, the sandbar,
is a steadily disappearing foothold."

Thanks for this rich and insightful write!

Yes Kate....Life is constant flux and movement...there is no mileage to be made in standing still...we must either compete or fail...either adapt or die...flow or sink...the stark choice is ours...the successful ones are those who can adapt to changing circumstances and events in a smooth and beneficial manner....exercising controlled and disciplined reactions...
Thought provoking write as ever...
Peter

Hmmm... sadly, the assertion of choice is debatable, Kate. This is a very finely crafted piece of work. Yes, the sandbar image is effective. A thoughtful, engaging read. Thank you!
Enjoy your break.
