It's amazing the effect a day out at The British Museum can have on us English... "Don't go down to Egypt...!" Actually, I know this has been a long-suppressed response to Matchbox 20's "Push" - great tune and sentiment!
SPHINX
Please don't do it -
that thing that you do
that makes me want to suck
your insides out, starting with
your voice, your breathing.
Please don't make me
fall, crashing and beating
my tiny, clenched fists against
the ever-expanding expanse
of your chest,
kneading your shoulders.
Please don't cause me
to have to drag you down,
here and now, central
in this public place
and absorb you right into me:
carry you foetal beneath my skin
seven inches deep.
We are bones fused and ignited:
yours and mine.
Pounded into such fine dust,
pollen on the wind
unable to contain life's
tumult and energy within
the frail confines of flesh.
