SHELTER


He kneaded her shoulders
with the strong tips
of his fingers and tongue,
absorbing her yoke of pain.

As his tears of empathy fell,
her vast ivory blades -
like splinted arms in a sling -
began to ridge like wave-lapped sand,
raising up softly-budding nodes
that erupted bloodless
through her smooth translucent skin.

Like soft ribs they extended,
rippled and flexed, becoming dressed,
weaving a feathered softness
that spread like holy fire
from each pointed, sharpened quill
through to pulsing vanes.

Magnificent her wings appeared,
so vast they eclipsed all light -
encompassing them both round about
in tender womb of night.

Suddenly she was eagle mother
stirring up their nest for flight,
holding them safe
in the lap of her pinions.

Icarus could not fall.
