PRE-BIRTH

Maybe this is heaven

then, before it all got complicated;

wet and warm and neither longed for

nor rejected

From Antenatal by Lydia McPherson

Free-floating freedom from

each mother’s misplaced longing,

every father’s boyhood dream

that has, as yet, no perception

of its python squeeze on pain.

This Zen-like state is wet and warm

like love without forever;

the satisfied hiatus before

it turns its back to snore.

Such heaven’s not for after:

it’s how it was before.

Truly a thought-inspiring offering, Kate. That "place" would most likely soothe this constant pain that I feel. Thank you for sharing this gift. Love and best wishes,

Regis

It is indeed how it was before and, even as we long for this state of bliss and primeval reunion, we also realize that it is the death drive that freezes and hypnotizes us, so that we end up wishing for something that is not meant to be during our lifetime. Maybe a little bit of meditation, a good night's sleep and the arms of the one(s) we love can transform a brief moment in life into that Zen-like state that you are describing here... :) Delightful writing, dear Kate.

the non-thought of pre-birth is loaded with memories existing on a spiritual plane ... just glad my mother avoided the "python squeeze on pain" so it did'nt put any direct strain on me until the post-birth turned its back and then nothing was like it was before ...
this poem definitely gives birth to idea ... nicely done ...

the womb's the place; but the lease is only 9 months, alas,
and then we're turfed out to join the heaving mass of humanity.
I cannot agree more, Kate. This 'is' the heaven for everyone. K

Always we never really quite grasp how good we have it until after. Sometimes not such a bad state of mind. They say ignorance is bliss. Another mind provoking poem from our Kate. Hope all is well in jolly ole England.
Much peace love and light

"Its how it was before" and perhaps for many of us, as it remains now. If only more were capable of perceiving "love" as a creative energy, an amorphous state of mind and being that never settles into any fixed identity or ideological dogma. It is as you portrayed, wet and warm and forever seeking out only its refuge from that which would destroy it. Your "Pre-Birth" is an infinite aliveness for the conscious. Beautifully said. Thank you.

Very interesting, almost metaphysical. Trying to conceive of life after conception before birth. I'm not sure if you wrote it or found it, but it is quite mesmerizing to read.

Touching, insightful, cuts through like a razor's edge to the core of all relationships!
It's worth a try to live without any worry of rejection, I think, to give love in that state...free floating...and maybe forever just happens
Blessings xx Love to you,
Christine

Kate, you have aroused a suspicion I have long held with regards to my antenatal, prenatal journey. My mother had two successive miscarriages prior to my birth. The last, three months prior to my conception. I have always felt a kinship, a bonding to two figures who have appeared often in my dreams for as long as I have been able to remember a dream. A faceless baby girl and a faceless baby boy, struggling for air as they fell into the water and were never able to swim, and thus perished. My antenatal existence has been a source of great mystery and curiosity to me because of those circumstances. The power of suggestion? I had the dreams for years before I learned of the miscarriages preceding my birth. "Warm wet and free floating" I readily relate to without having to actually know that is how it was. But "love without forever", I struggle to reconcile as unrelated, antenatal and beyond life. You have awakened old emotions that have long dwelt within this aged mind. A masterful work. I wish you love and peace my dear friend. Jon Michael

that 'misplaced longing' makes me sit up
and pay full attention
Great One
and disturbs and challenges me,too;
is this the best we will know it..before light
and breathing, before sound and language and
conversation and disappontment and pain? but before
the joy of it all, too;
i'll shut up now...see what you've done!

...intriguing intimations of immortality here, Kate... something rich resonates throughout this poem, particularly in "the satisfied hiatus before it turns back to snore" ...lovely couplet that.... perfect piece of assonance blended with consonance... wrapped up tight in an aural delight.

Nice to see you posting again, Kate.

"This Zen-like state is wet and warm

I like that verse, makes much more sense that the forevermore, for, my god, that is a horrible thing to have to live up to. You have such wonderful versus, the whole poem is right-on about everything, Kate. I love this, oh yes, I will save this one. Thank you.
