I wrote this poem shortly after my son Darian was shot and killed. It was a painful recollection of missing my son and knowing I will never see him again.
When Half of Your Heart Dies
When half of your heart dies, the sun shines not as bright.
The stars have lost their luster, peering silently in the night.
When half of your heart dies, the songs no longer rhyme.
The melodies you once enjoyed are now faded memories of time.
When half of your heart dies, the pain you once did feel,
Is magnified 10 fold or more in a heart that will not heal.
When half of your heart dies, only time can ease the pain.
And it is in his loving care, that peace you will regain.
When half of my heart died, on that early, sultry morn,
My world as I had known it would surly be no more.
When half of my heart died, I found it difficult to comprehend.
My faith was being tested; could I endure it to the end?
He did not say it would be easy; he told me to hold onto my faith.
For it is faith that will sustain us, as we are saved by his loving grace.
He would not place a burden too much for us to bear,
So we must believe and trust that we are in his care.
And so your life continues on; you pray, you mourn, you cry.
Your blessings still abounding, though half of your heart has died.
