I was inspired to write this poem after awakening from a dream...

Poem Artwork

I lightly dozed,

an open book on my chest,

the kitty lay purring beside me,

when laughter rang out,

I woke up with a jolt,

I knew that I wasn’t alone.

I reeled from shock

after opening the door.

My visitors were loved ones

who’d gone on before.

Tears coursed down my cheeks

as I hugged each one close.

“Is this real?

Are you here?”

Joy deluged shadows

where misery had dwelt,

replacing the darkness with light.

The heady scents I’d missed

drenched my memory like rain…

Clove oil, tobacco,

gardenias, and bread,

powder, and lemon verbena.

Smiles, and giggles,

a communion of words,

filled voids in my life

that had formed when they left.

Then as swift as they’d come,

they stepped back through the veil,

withdrew from the voids,

dimming my heart’s light once more.

It was night when I woke.

They were only a dream.

Though crushed, bereft

as reality set in,

what they’d offered was proof

that they weren’t far away…

that we’d all be together again.

In their way they’d assured,

all is good, all is right.

Nearby, they’re waiting for me.

What a fine, exquisitely crafted poem that involves the memory and the heart, but speaks to us in the language of the soul. It is a poem of happiness and sadness. Thank you for the delight of reading it. C. J.

A poem every feeling person can relate to! I especially
love:
"The vivid scents I had missed,

drenched my memory like rain…

clove oil, tobacco,

gardenias,

and bread,

dusting powder,

and lemon verbena."

Very creative of you to use our oldest and most
memory-triggering sense. And the smells you
chose are wonderfully unpredictable. Not only
evocative, but lead to a rich variety of sounds
that roll deliciously on the tongue.

Brava!! Phyllis :) PS: Thanks, too, for leading
me to Autumn Leaves. <3

I have vivid dreams and your verses remind me of a number of them. I think that dreams are very meaningful and I love the way you have put this across in your poem here. Thank you, Michelle. Love and peace. Regis

Perhaps, they all were missing you and decided to come to be near you for a few moments. Spiritual visitors are a blessing. I could certainly feel your aching as I read your verses, Michelle. I gasped for a breath as I felt your longing and your tears. I will leave you an interesting story in your messages about a similar situation of my maternal grandmother. This is excellent writing! You took me into your soul with this.
Take care,
Sherry

Dear Michelle,
I've been struggling to place a review to this poem. Not because I didn't think it was good - quite the contrary. I think your work is extraordinary. I am finding it difficult to respond because the experience has stirred something in me. I find death to be so incredibly sad - not for the one that goes but for those of us left behind. I don't know what this dream meant but I can only imagine how it made you feel. I felt it with you so profoundly impactful were these words.
Thank you for sharing precious friend
Love Chanti
