The Legend of Melba Toast

A true story, believe it or not!

Poem Artwork

Folks called her Melba,

“The Toast Of The Town”

Each night she’d swirl

tassels and pasties around,

She’d shimmy and shake,

as lithe as a snake,

charming men to lay their money down.

Melba lived the life of a star

as the “Toast Of The Town”…

after the crowds had gone home,

and the lights were turned down.

She had glamour, acclaim,

greenbacks, champagne, and fame…

and her passion for men was renowned.

But alas our girl Melba,

“The Toast Of The Town”

learned life in the fast lane

wore prettiness down.

Wrinkles and bags

turned her into a hag

with a face like a clown.

One night poor drunk Melba,

in a torn ragged gown,

stumbled into the sea

where she floundered and drowned.

Her ship sailed away…

heavy price to be paid…

for life as “The Toast Of The Town”.

What a fine, rhythmic motion there is to this irresistible poem. And a certain timelessness. An ever true, sad tale, beautifully told; so simply, yet so compellingly.

Poignant, well-written, compassionate and tender, Michelle. Her name alone could well depict her whole life story, and sadly hers is not uncommon, I think: one toast, many slices. TY for this.

This is an epic within itself, Michelle. There were many Melbas, and though the way they met their fate may have differed, most lost their fame as life, gravity and fast times took their toll on them. It is sad how some people will trade their soul for a time of fame. Very nicely written tribute to a woman who is a legend and once was "The Toast of the Town."
Take care,
Sherry
