The diversity of the goddesses is the expression of cultural needs. Throughout the world, rice, corn, and wheat have always been the most essential cultivated grains, and their importance is enshrined in the Greek goddess Demeter. She gave grain to humankind but laid the foundations of civilization when she made a gift of the plough and the techniques of farming tp Triptolemus. When Hades kidnapped Demeter's daugher Kore (or Persephone) whom he bore away to the underworld, the earth became sterile. Hades agreed to release Kore, but because she ate some of a pomegrante, a symbol of the vagina, during her time in the underworld, she was forced to return for a part of each year. Winter is caused by Demeter mourning her absence.
A very well-written piece of mythology, Peter! As a goddess worshipper, I really enjoyed this poem.
