Well if you ever plan to motor west
Just take my way that's the highway that's the best
Get your kicks on Route 66

Well it winds from Chicago to L.A.
More than 2000 miles all the way
Get your kicks on Route 66

Rolling Stones

.....................................................................

I drove across America on Route 66

from LA to Chicago and I loved every bit

with the wind at my back, and Fogerty on top form

I followed that straight line, on the journey of a lifetime

hot dogs and pastarami, swirled down with diet coke

sweltering in the Grand Canyon, where the Colarado river flows swift

sojourned in Sedona, where I aligned my spirit and soul

taking it easy with the Eagles, while outside the coyotes howled

traversed the glorious Utah plains, mesmerized by magic Canyonlands

took a detour down fabolous New Mexico, to view the magnificent hieroglyphics

cut through the Lone Star state with a Texan swagger

Houston was a calling, and Galveston's sea waves were crashing

dined on New Orleans's crawfish, while the Cajun played

Alabama blues were a wailing, as the sun sank on the Indian sacred sites

followed the Missippi with Georgia on my mind

breakfasted in Savannah, while Ray Charles crooned

tracked the Florida glades, Tallahassee was way cool

started climbing the Carolinians, with my foot on the gas

kept my eyes on the rear mirror, making sure no sheriff was on my tail

hightailed into Illinois, Chicago is my favorite place

Indiana was calling, and Ohio was on the horizon

crossed them Virginians, and roared into Washington DC

the end of my pilgrimage, in our great nation's capital

standing outside the White House, where Dubya rules

I smiled within myself, looking back on two and a half thousand miles

Boy that was fun, I'll need to do this again

for some odd reason, the Ricky Nelson song came to mind: I'm a travelin'man, made a lot of stops , all over the world...

well, this poem of yours was a fast-paced travel tour for sure, thanks , Peter. Mary

This verse and Route 66 have come into my life a few times in the past few days. I heard the song a few days back...went too see "Cars" and it is about a small town that lost it's businesses when the interstate came through...and racing (go see it) and James Taylor's song about small towns. So much of America is thrown to the side because of interstates being faster but duller. What's more important...getting there quicker or enjoying getting there with memories?

Love and peace and rote 66!

Gives me chills, Peter! You know Texas is painting the numbers on the roads again...interstate! I think we're coming full circle here...and what a world for writers! Linda

Gettin One's Kicks on Route 66 is something I've been enjoying most of my life - I actually live fairly close to the beginning of old Route 66, and I've often put the petal to the metal on it - taking in all these fabulous sights. Used to like the old TV series, Route 66, too!

It's for certain you've covered more of this country's territory than I have...even still, we have crossed a few of the same paths...mine the lower route west and then a swing up for a taste of Utah, on to Colorado and Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. You have to see Big Sky country. I have done the east from Maine to Florida and the coastal South...to New Orleans. There are just so many places I want to see..and take my sweet time doing the side roads...create a few stories in good company along the way. I don't want to miss a thing!

Thanks gor sharing your journey!

Love,

Taylor~

I live just a couple of blocks off of Route 66, Peter. Here in Albuquerque, they have kept most of the old buildings in tact and fixed them up so that they are now businesses and galleries, theatres, etc. I love to walk along Central Avenue and feel the ghosts from the past making their way down that once long and dusty road. Nice feelings in this, Peter, I hope you make it out this way again. There is so much to see all the way along Rte: 66.
Take care,
Sherry

What a super adventure you've taken, Peter - Geez, even Tod Stiles and Buz Murdock had nothing over on you in their '60's Corvette convertible!
Love the way you weaved this all together, Peter - very artsy, I should say!

I've been through most of those states myself, and I loved The Route 66 TV show, obviously. The best part though, was that theme song!
Thanks for the memories - yours, and mine!

Hope you get to pass through the rolling hills of Pennsylvania sometime during your life...especially in the Autumn. We are known for its Blazing Beauty!

God bless you, Peter! love&prayers, Rhonda

Peter you did what I did in reverse;-) My niece and I took turns driving, when I moved to California from Illinois. I first went to check it out so we took our time and stopped in most of the states you mentioned. This was our most extended trip. She stayed in California , I flew back to Chicago. Then a month later drove out with her husband but we took a different route, a shorter one. You sure stirred my memories in this journey, thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed your word painting!

I collect Route 66 memoribilia. So much of our American folklore swept along that neon, gas station and motel path. Hey we've been driving ever since, looking for shangri-la. Was a lot more fun when the speed limit was 85 tho, lol. Cool write. Did I say that?
