Very well said and done Suzie! I grew up with an alcholic father and know how it can destroy. He lost all of his children, his wife, home, friends, family, morals and dignity to his drinking habit. I was Daddys girl and learned at an earily age to make excuses for him. As an adult it took quite a bit of theraphy to learn not to be an enabler and also how to let go and let God! I couldn't change one thing and making excuses for his behavior only helped him drink and fel ok about it. I had to LEARN tough love. This poem so described the dangers and pain of Alcholism and drug addiction too for that matter. Thank you for taking time and having the insight to write on this very important subject! This can be a very touchy subject. I choose not to call addictions diseases but as any addiction which can lead to disease and complications they are the choice of the individual. My compassion lies with the innocents that are unwantingly exposed to the addicts and abusers. Very thought provoking write.

glad you tackled this topic, Suzie. I happen to believe we ought to love all people, regardless of their poor choices or their state of disease (personally, I think it can be both depending on the situation and a persons genetic makeup), and I think that love is never wasted with one giant caveat: that it is not codependent or enabling or passive-aggressive behavior masked by something we call love... it's a difficult distinction. A fine piece of poetry on the results of over imbibing alcohol.

I believe totally opposite of Sandie. We have free choice, and when we choose to overdo anything it becomes an addiction, whether it be food, drink, drugs, and many other addictions. Yes it can effect our health for the worst and usually does if we continue to abuse ourselves with it. However, it is not a disease, that's a nice way ofthe medical field copping out of the situaltion they are unable to do anything about since so many of them are addicts also. If only our society would face the truth we might get a handle on how to deal with addiction! It is addiction to sex which keeps the aids virus growing in leaps and bounds. There is a choice to be made and those who refuse to make it keep the rest of society beholden to their reckless behaviour! Sorry Suzie, but this is a pet peeve of mine, because everyone wants to cop out by calling it a disease when it's a free choice made that can lead to a disease if misused like any other addiction! Sex, porn,gambling the list is endless. Not diseases but addictions. Bad habits that we give in to for our pleasure that turns into misery because we refuse to control our appetites! Eileen

Alcohol can alter the human's minds, affects its sensible thoughts. Drinking is a disease, not an addiction. It should be treated as such.
