Standing in the breeze near an ice sculpture I sipped my martini and exchanged pleasantries with other guests But the night, for me, would take a different turn Out of nowhere came a verbose insulting man I had overheard him making multiple introductions using five different names Claiming to have been born in three different Countries Curiously I confronted him in a cynical manner, tempered with a bit of humor, and asked “How could that be ?” He replied with obvious disdain “You don’t know my intentions” I watched then as he worked the room Flashing a well-known label as a pretentious moniker So seemingly gracious and endearing to more trusting souls I watched Pondering what he had said Trying to figure out his game How long it would take Wondering where it would lead And if the label he sported was less genuine than he Then it hit me I realized that I was wasting my time This town is full of creeps like that
As I drove back home along the coast I breathed in the salty air and said a prayer for the more trusting souls

Enjoyed the write. Our world is full of creeps like that; thank goodness some have the insight to see. Holly
Those who deceive like this are usually filled with insecurity and have the need to impress. If only people could all just be upfront and open. As you know I'm inclined to be one of those 'trusting souls' but I'm learning valuable life lessons with you. You show your versatility as a writer here my Cuddles. A visual write with clever use of metaphor to get your point across.

I can only feel pity for people such as those, Edwin to have such a low self esteem as to be unable, ashamed, afraid or for whatever reason not want to use your own name is sad. I am a poor retired writer but when I introduce myself, I stand tall, shake hands firmly and feel proud that I have strived to live my life honestly and to the best of my talents. Good write and good points made.
Sounds like you spent the evening in AD, Ed, pictures and fake names, authors incognito, masks, excessive verbiage. Let's go out for a martini where the real poets with trusting names recite us some honest olive branch poetry and we'll leave them some honest reviews...Blessed be...you're a good poet, Edwin...

There will always be tricksters in this world. I think we should pray for them too, maybe they would stop what they are doing. Great poem though. Victor
You present a mystifying problem here Edwin. One that would take the mind-power of Sherlock Holmes to unravel.
I enjoyed this write immensely incidently. Cyber-space is filled with illusion, or what we extrapolate as illusion.
First ... I relate to your insight about the proliferation of deception in the virtual realm, I write on this subject often, and quite frankly I am abhored by what I percieve.
Second, in light of my own experiences, I have found that often first impressions, although powerful and convincing, might be erroneous. For me the bottom line is not the illusion, but the substance of what the percieved illusion is communicating.
Your muse on this write was quite powerful. You are growing as a writer. I salute you!
