I talked to a U.S. soldier just today

A nice young man so far away

"I fight for democracy" so he said

"So a child can sleep safe in his bed"

In Iraq he watched the terror grow

Like September eleventh who could know

He spoke brave words into my ear

Hid well inside his inner fear

He said "His wife cries for him at home

yet so many of his friends are there alone"

He asked "Does America know we’re here

it would mean so much to know they care"

He said "When we drew a line across the sand

our troops made the enemy understand

the tears that were shed beneath the towers

we would repay in the darkest hours"

He said "The people of Iraq all now have hope

Ttat the free world all will help them cope,

no more terror, no rapes, no genocide,

Where children can play and do not hide

where women can vote and not be beat

no more dictators controlling the street."
