Old Sam, the River Trout and I See Eye to Eye
The river rolls into the lake and the where the beavers build their dam
I sit on a stump and watch nature’s art and cast a line again
The sun set’s close to the ground as the evening shadows play
I feel a gentle tug and know old Sam the trout is here today
We tease each other for a bit till he tires of the game
I wind in my line and smile a bit he just took my worm again
Some say old Sam is two feet long and I heard he weighs ten pound
Know one has ever caught him he’s never felt the taste of ground
Another juicy worm is rigged and I cast to the ‘neath the shady trees
Tease the line a little till I feel his nudge against the bait
He tugs again and the bobber sinks and I watch diving deep
Adrenaline rushes through my veins this one I’m going to keep
Seconds turn to minutes in a tug of war neither will cede
I gain some line then he peels it back and heads for tangled roots
He’s wise, old Sam and gives his best and takes air and crashes down
I hold on tight and I’m full of spite he’ll not make me a clown
The line goes slack and I feel his weight he’s given all he had
I wind in the last few yards and in the fading light I bring him in
I go to net him to the shore but a look is in his tired old eye
Not today my friend I slip the hook and with a wiggle I say goodbye.
glad you let him go!!!!
take care
