It was my first drink of adult hood
When I first went to High school
We’d sit around the café
Like cigarettes…oh so cool
It was the way I got through cramming
History and science trance
When the teacher was a droner
But could kill with just a glance
The drink that sent me off to work
So through hangover eyes I’d see
It was spiced with a little black rum
When I could get it legally
I drank a gallon before my baby came
Likewise my granddaughters too
I couldn’t miss a single minute
It’s just what parents do
When I kept my parents dying vigils
The nurses kindly kept my cup refilled
It gave me false strength and comfort
And they forgave the ones I spilled
It was the companion to my pen
Now my computer shares it’s space
Many a tale and poetry were written
On a caffeine quickened pace
The doctor forced me into creamless decaf
Said my heart couldn’t take the strain
Now diabetes stole the sugar from it
God things will never be the same
Just a minute…hold it a sec
hmmmmnn that’s really not that bad
I guess I can live with my coffee black
No need to feel so sad.
It has helped me through many a night sitting in hospitals as well. My first cup in the morning I will raise it in salute to you. Karen
..a touch of cream only for me..
for years I woke with a Dr. Pepper in my hand, but now I know how many years I wasted when the good stuff was only made for visitors.
Maybe some day we can get together and share a cup!
