Friendship...

I Shall Not Judge

Nay, I will never sit on you in judgement

when you need to read your sins out loud

My spirit’s soul is not so damn perfect

that I would dare to stand so proud

Do you think that I am spotless and sin-free

I won’t tell you that I’ve done no wrong

No, you’ve only known my outside vanity

believe me I am not so pure and strong

You think you need from me my blessing

that implies authority in my hand

Only one can grant that, this I have been told

he sits high above, no longer of this land

Nay, I can offer only words of care

a flashlight when you fear the night

A shoulder to rest your tired mind

…and my hand for you to hold on tight.

You are so right about the only real judge is looking down on us. But is feels so good to have someone to lean on and listen. There is so much feeling in this poem. Karen

I like this and think about saying the same thing but you put it so well. This is the true measure of a friend.

And what a gift your friendship must be, Felix, to love a friend with this kind of solidarity and unconditionality. Just beautiful, and demonstrates the desire to serve, rather than to be served, which, sadly, so many "friendships" are about - I know to my cost. Although I am a parent, I confess to saying as much to my kids: "Look, guys, I may be your mother, but that doesn't make me any less able to muck up or any more able to judge..." it's not a position I have gained by experience or authority, but one of relational "accident" more than anything else! Therein lies a healthy respect for each other, I think, and the knowledge that "to err is to be human". I do what I can - that is the security that I give them, and they know, hopefully, that I can never sit in judgment on them - only attempt to help and guide. Like you, it sounds!! Bless you, Kate xx You ARE Huggy Bear - solid as a rock!!
