Prisoner of Dorchester Federal Institution

The prison is real (New Brunswick, Canada)and so is the prisoner who was sentenced to three consecutive terms for murder at nineteen.

The stone walls are topped with razor wire

They reach for the clouds so high above

The windows and doors are fortified with bars

This is sure not a place of smiles and love

The pointy turrets look like castle towers

The guards hold machine guns steady aimed

The field of fire intersects the yard

Where the wild flowers grow untamed

They call it the Dorchester Federal Institution

But it’s been a prison since 1892

The very hardened long term criminals

Shuffled through its gates with time to do

Inside a model prisoner sits handcuffed

Faint act of smiling for his mom and dad

He had been a boy accused of murder

At nineteen he was given life...so sad

Now they say he’ll be out at fifty three

If he keeps being the model that he’s been

They may even let him go at fifty

Tell him to start again without his sin

He doesn’t have much hope though

This prison has been his lonely home

He nods his head goodbye to his folks

Shuffles to his lonely cell once more alone

Fee,
It's always sad to see someone waste their life like this. Institutionalized. But they make a choice. I'm not a big fan of keeping killers alive, though. They eat our tax dollars, and they have free access to educational avenues and a gym (in some cases). Wish the rest of us had those bennies. This write is great. Hugs,
Sheila

This brought back memories for me. Really sad that they have to do such terrible things and get themselves locked up for life or to be executed. Very interestingly written. Karen

One has to wonder if at that age, he could even adjust to life in the outside world. It would seem impossible for him to find work and lead a productive life. Unfortunately, prisons never really do rehabilitate people at all...mostly they just waste away the time.
Take care,
Sherry

Very sad write....I cannot even come close to relate to this....but being a prisoner for life could be even worse me thinks!

Being lockedup within the self...a total different story!!
To that I can relate!!

It is soooo sad that a young person has to live that kind of life. Prisons here in Wisconsin, are playpens, compared to most. We don't have the death penalty (not yet), we do have truth in sentencing, which means, if you are given life, you do life, and die inside those lonely gray, moss eaten walls. In the song The Man In Balck by Johnny Cash, he says "...I wear it for the prisoner, who has long since paid for his crime..." I have always felt, that if you are sentenced to Prison, and you have 'PAID YOUR DEBT' to society, that they should not hold that against you in employment, housing, loans, etc. This is a very sad portrait of a young man, who lost his entire life, to prison. I don't know the circumstances, but, it is still a shame. May the Lord Jesus bless you, and be with you always, and at your side constantly. With much love in my heart, joy to the world, peace on earth, & ((((((((((MANY SISTERLY HUGGGGSSSS)))))))))), your little sister, Barbie

How very sad Felix-very plaintive. Reminds me of the movie "Shawshank Redemption" where several of the long term prisoners share how frightened they are of trying to survive on the outside. When they are paroled, they want to find ways to break their parole so they can be sent back where things make sense. That statement in itself is sad. Good job...Michelle
