Where is the Love?

My mother in law who has lived with wife and I was rushed to hospital on Friday after a fall. She is the typical little 86 year old sweetness and light greeat grndmotherly type. The fall and infection was bad but she advanced into the last stages of Alzheimers and it broke my heart to see how many of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren couldn't take the time to care....

She’s a tiny white haired beauty

Lost to the memories of time

Age robbed of her dignity

Wearing pull-ups at bedtime

Who are these strangers round me?

What kind of hotel am I in?

Where did they put my babies?

Please don’t let the bad men in

Eighty six years went behind her

Children who’ve forgotten

Teardrops stain her cotton pillows

As she thinks life seems a trick so rotten

Worn out eyes no longer see the sun

Fingers now withered and dry

She feels like she’s been deserted

You can hear her heart-broke sigh

It is a shame how quick they forget, but that little white haired beauty was there for them all their lives. As you know I took care Of my mom and dad until their last breath, It didn't bother me that Mom was in a wheelchair. I would do it all over again. Thank you Felix for speaking for her. Love you Cuz XOXO, Rose

Been there done that too. I really don't see how people live with themselves when they turn their back on their parents, but it happens a lot. I too was with my parents when they were facing their last days on earth. At least they knew that I was there for them and loved them, which I hope eased their aching hearts. Such a touching write. powerful words, Felix. I am glad you've spoken them in this poem. I'm even more thankful for you and your wife and your presence with your mother-in-law at the end. Godspeed, Dawn

Oh I could see my own dear grandmothers in this. We must end this disaster called aging somehow! Life deserves more dignity. You have attempted her to restore hers, and I truly appreciate the sentiment.

Sad isn't it. Blessings to you and yours for being there. The last days of any life are beautiful and should be shared. Lovely sweet poem and a thoughtful tribute.

It is so difficult to watch a little piece of them slip away every day. I am glad that you and your wife are able to be there for your MIL. No one should have to go through that without someone with them, who loves them, to help.
Take care,
Sherry

A poem, which I can relate to. My mother's death could not be foreseen, but my father's was another story. The last month of his life was being totally alone in a nursing home. None of his four sons could take the time to visit. I look back at that time with regrets and wished I had buried the hatchet at least till his death. But, I've also seen the love and caring my wife and her brothers have for my in-laws. 25-30 people are reggular visitors for my mother-in-law and 40 of us were at my father-in-laws death bed. You're a good man Felix, for showing a love and caring that comes deep within the heart and soul... my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family... Godspeed, Dave

This cuts like a knife, Felix. The pain is tangible and acute. We have lost what it means to care and respect our elderly folk who have done everything for us in life - not least birthing, bearing and providing for us in the vulnerable years of our lives at the beginning. Such a shame we are not there for them at their end. We can therefore expect no less treatment from our own offspring, if this is the moral we live by. BUT THANK GOD FOR YOU AND YOUR WIFE, FELIX! You have been, are and will continue to be your mother's redemption and are her light to brighen the darkness. I bleed for you and thank you for showing and teaching us what the real priorities for our lives should be: something the press of life would seek to strip away from our thinking. You are both Grandpops and Bubbapops! What a treasure of a family man you are. Bless you and your lovely wife and ma-in-law. TY Kate xx
