Country Scents

Funny how some things remain as vibrant and clear in our minds even when we grow old...

The warm scent of a barn loft….hay moist and seasoned, warm milk scent from freshly milked cows, a barn cat meowing for the leftovers, a young girls breath against my neck as my hands explored unknown places

The smell of cow patties…ripe but not altogether unpleasant either in the morning sun, the smell of the heather and the strawberries growing along the cow path, the smell of my own sweat as we walk hand in hand driving the cows to pasture

The smell of home brew…heady and warm, of old leather Buick car seats, of your momma’s toilet water on your neck, the smell of ivory soap in your hair as we dance to a country song

Kerosene lantern fumes…smoky, musky just barely holding back the night, in the shadows I taste your lips, smell the scent of the Pepsi you’d been sipping and I smell your need as strong and wild as the animals we’d watched rutting in the field just that day

Scents and odours so long forgotten yet still so close to the surface of my memory. So strong after all these years. I can still smell theses things as if I was once again a lad of sixteen. Once again that city boy transplanted to farm country. Smells, tastes, sounds and feelings, Heaven was a country farm and a country girl that I never ever did forget.

Felix,
You can take the person out of the country but you can't take the country out of the person. And you've verified it.
You have such a wonderful way with words. I don't know too many that could have woven cow patties and romance together, and in the end found such exquisite poetry...Nobody but you, Felix...nobody but you! And that is definetly meant to be a compliment!
I so enjoyed this!

Felix,

Having not been raised in the country-country (suburbia, for me), the imagery you invoked in your words stimulated each sense with delight! Now I see what I've been missing--an excellent write, Poet and friend! Well done!

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

(And Denise, even though I'm not country, I still remember K orange soda and hay rides. :) And the thing I miss most? Not having to worry about who your neighbor was and not locking the car or house up at night. :( I really miss those.

By golly! As a countrygirl, I can really relate to these tantilizing scents and aromas. There's nothing like springtime in the country! Thank you for the nastalgic trip, Felix! Do you remember K orange soda? and REAL peanut patties? Hay rides? Fig trees in the front yard? Thank you!

You have known the fabric of my life from the other side of the world, Felix... and, not only that, you have detailed JUST those things that STILL speak life and soul into my heart and mind whenever the thoughts of them are conjured. So often we are led to believe that sassy city-life is really "where it's at" - but who can deny the power of being at one with Mother Nature to give us the highest of all highs - truly in tune with every sensation in our body that feeds and nurtures what it means to "live" in the fullest sense? Yeah, "bright lights" stimulate and excite... but "no lights" lead you to discover extra-sensory extensions of the self that glitz on the surface doesn't even touch... am I right or am I right?! :)) Sorry to be so damned irritating and smirky, but tis true, ain't it? LOL Kountry Kate xx (Am taking cover from the City Slickers among us... :))

Having been raised on a horse and cattle ranch, this hits home. Well done. It’s hard to beat fresh cut alfalfa.

I've always drawn to the life in a farm. It's the simplicity that gives the utmost pleasure in our lives.

A wonderful much enjoyable write.
