Farewell to My Brother and Best Friend

He has been gone a few years now and this is the first time I could bring myself to write about him...I still miss him every day

A Sad Farewell to My Best Friend

I held his hand and he would not talk

Machines pretending life is there

All through the night I talked to him

Hoping on some level he could hear

I talked to him of old times

Of all the things that brothers do

About cars and bars and parties

Of course women came up too

My tears ran down my bearded cheek

I didn’t give a dam who saw me cry

The nurses glanced at me with pity

Their whispered words soft as a sigh

I drank industrial coffee from a can

Wiped a cold cloth across the brow

This red haired, bearded Viking of a man

I knew I had to say goodbye somehow

When day light broke my night’s lament

I faced the doctor’s questioning stare

The white coats turned the buttons

Machines blinked off here and there

I laid Bill’s hand upon his chest

Kissed my brother goodbye old friend

Walked away through a blurry visioned veil

It was curtain time, the end, the end.

Tears...I lost my sister and best friend in '98 and every line brought back those last moments with her. Miss her more as I grow older. She was only 51. We always joked we'd be like the poem when we grew older-the ladies in red & purple. Losing a sibling leaves a hole in your heart that can't be filled, allthough I do feel her presence in my sad moments-as tho she's comforting me as she did
when she was alive. My condolences, Felix...Lin

As I was taking care of my mother these past four days, I thought of such things. It kills to think of her going. I know she won't last as long as some. I have to keep myself going somehow and try to remember the good things along with the bad and never to forget the love she always tried to give us all. this was wonderful. it made me so happy, so sad, so.... it was just a touching piece. It also made me think of the daughter I lost. this pains me so in so many ways.

There is nothing harder in this world than having to sit and watch one of our loved ones pass away. Saying good bye seems so final, but really we are just wishing them a fond farewell, knowing that they are on the other side waiting for us and watching over us until we join them. We have all been there before also and know that it is hard to accept that our loved ones are no longer here on this earth with us. Time eases the pain, but never completely erases it from our hearts. Gods blessings to you. This write is very good, it is words from the heart. Karen

A most beautiful expression Felix for an act of dearest love, that would've been so very hard for you to endure.
I am glad you have written this for your brother, for in doing so, I know it is part and parcel of more of the healing process.
TY for sharing, and may you be blessed Felix.
Love n hugs
Ch'erie

Dearest Felix, this is so moving and beautiful. I woke up this morning with the thought that I should write a poem about losing your best friend, and then opened up authorsden to see that you have done just that... Thank you from my heart for finding words to describe the indescribable! May souls eternally unite... in life and in it's flipside!! Love Suzie xox :-)

I can only say having lost a son and never able to write about him, I'm glad you found the way to get it out. This is a loving tribute.
I'm sorry for your loss.

I can feel the vibrating ache in your words, Felix. The loss of our siblings is so very difficult if not impossible to accept. We never get over missing them, for every cell of our being is linked to theirs. I too, have lost my brother, and doesn't it sting!
Take care,
Sherry

This is so tragic. What a terrible ordeal you had to go through. And as you noted, it is something that will hang with you for life. Be well dear Felix. I know it isn't easy, but you must try. ~ Sara

Hope you found this a relief and healing, dear Felix. So precious, so intimate, so much a part of your heart and soul. But, I hope that its richness in the writing hasn't torn something out of you, but rather sewn it back in again, but in peace and rest and not in agony. May the beauty of this fond remembrance and tribute nourish and feed you afresh as you consider the gift of Bill's life and friendship to you - and that he is still with you and in everything you are and do. I believe that he COULD hear and appreciate on some level your every word, Sweetheart. Hearing is the very last sense to leave the mortal body, I think, even in dying. "Just keep talking until he's finally gone" my sister-in-law was told when her very ancient Dad was quitting this earth. So we probably have very little understanding as to what is capable of being received while the body is still intact - even if comatose. Bless you, dear One. LOL Kate. TY so much for this, Pops... such a privilege to be "let in" to such private territory. xxxxxOOOOOO xxxxxxx

Glad that you are able to wriote about it. My father was there last week. I was the only family member unable to be there. They are trying to wean him from life support now. He might make it to face his 86th year.

How wonderful that you and your brother blessed each other's lives not only with kinship but with the joy of enduring friendship. Death may have taken the body but his spirit lives on beautifully in FAREWELL TO MY BROTHER AND BEST FRIEND. And it lives on also in the shared love that you will always carry within. Peace.

This is so sad- it honors him well, and your relationship, too.

((((( Oh Felix! )))))

I just know how you feel. I don't think anyone can know except unless they had been in the same situation. Losing one loved one forever is always very hard. My heart goes out to you.

The emotions in this one is so powerful, this has actually sent me to tears.

This brought back so many painful memories of the time when my dad was in the hospital, I also held his hands and told him so many things...

Most powerful emotional write indeed!!!!!

Oh, Felix! This is so powerful, yet tender, sad, yet beautiful ... and so well expressed! I had simuliar experiences with my husband and my father. Perhaps your brother heard or "felt" your presence and your affection. Perhaps someday, somehow, your souls will meet again. Heartfelt write. Bravo, Felix!

Oh no, how sad. It's a catharsis, though, isn't it? To share and to mourn this way? We must all end, but sometimes, we wish we could end together. For the sadness is ours, to have to go on without them. Thanks for sharing with us, you've shown others we are not alone in grief.
