Muse awoke nostalgic...

I Awoke to the Autumn of My Life

I awoke this morning in the autumn of my years

Still strong enough to hang to this tender branch of life

While my body like a leaf dries from my cares

The north wind blows and I shiver with my fears

I survived the ravishes of fate that came my way

Looked suffering in the eye like a jury trial

Youth spent like others in sweet denial until today

Raindrops hit and I hold on a little tighter as they play

I thought as a young man I was so smart I knew it all

Nothing could bend me spirit or break my will

Didn’t learn from the past or look to my future’s fall

The storm is coming now won’t be long I hear it call

I finally learned humility in these my final days

No leaf, or tree, nor even me can escape what is to be

So now I count the time gone by in so many grateful way

Soon the lighting flash and thunder crash…

a storm will finally pry me lose…

and my final prayer I’ll pray!

Ah, gratitude is true praise, Felix. For the sorrows as well as the joys. Everything blended into one mellow moment-NOW. Only those who have been through fire can savor the beauty of what is. A man who hasn't gone through trial isn't worth his salt, this much I have learned. Fine write!

Oh the regrets and desires to go back. Instead we relish what has been and what is yet to come. Be young in mind, Felix, it will keep you going. TO be honest, I never thought I'd see the year 2000, and with Bush in charge, now I know why! (grin)

But instead of looking to death, we need to learn to breathe every breath like the last!

Good write!

Nice work, Felix. One of the good things about growing older is that we can feel successful about surviving all those things that once seemed tough.

Autumn is the most beautiful season of the year. In comparison it can also be the most beautiful season of our lives. Although I have some time to consider that, I still believe that it is the time when we put the hardest part of our lives behind us and just enjoy life to the fullest from that point on. Very good. Such a wise reflection, dear Felix
Yet I feel i've been thru it all, even the coming storm left drops of rain on my face
looking into a mirroe, it seems so young
looking into my soul, it seems so old and broken
God bless you, poet

Hey, Pops! Goth Girl dialing in... don't know about "nostalgic" - seems very precipitately looking ahead, to me! :)) Yep, it's always a shock when our own mortality starts to stare us in the face - but it is at least comforting that it is a natural process, as you paint so well with your tender words here - when otherwise all too many are brought to an untimely end rather abruptly. My mother's spirit is still as youthful, though she is 87, but it is "fascinating" to actually be able to witness her advancing frailty in human terms and that is somehow "loosening" for both of us (hope this doesn't sound unfeeling, but is an acute statement of fact). Oh dear... don't want to get morbid here, but I am facing an investigative operation of my own on Monday, so I live between these two stark contrasts at the mo... Live for the day, Darlin, count your blessings, which I know you do... let the happy memories enrich your "now" again and again, like good compost - and know that fear and worry are to no avail and are not productive: as surely as night follows day, the trials will ALL pass and be endured, one way or another. SORRY! I am doing a right Kate ramble, but, my, this is a very BRIGHT and COLOURFUL poem which uses superbly the autumn metaphor to its best advantage. There is much beauty in all things, Felix - and you have a gift at bringing it out and enriching its emotions. Love this, bless you. Kate xx

a discerning reflection on life's stages ... we must remember, autumn is a very colorful season and reflects the wisdom of our experience ... though we are closer to the end, we are really approaching a new beginning ...
