Steeped Tea

I wrote this in the style of the old Newfoundland folk songs that I heard often on my mother's knee as a young child so the word play may be a little differnt then normal... and in our house growing up their was always a pot of tea stewing on the back of the woodstove

Steeped Tea

Wonder of wonders, how pleasant is he

Who can sit watch a sunset with a cup of steeped tea

Blessed are those who go to pray in a church

But I says my prayers on my lovely front porch

When the sunsets a fire and with me love next to me

I thank the good Lord above, for my cup of steeped tea

Now I says to my missus…I love you its true

I put me hand on her knee like I always will do

That was a very fine supper, you’re one of a kind

Now if I had a little desert, I would not really mind

Perhaps a few sugar cookies or donuts you see

Would be bloody lovely to dip in my steeped tea

Now I like to write poems and stories its true

To entertain family and friends just like you

Sometimes I cannot think, my mind draws a blank

It seems that at last I’ve overdrawn the word bank

So I heads to the kettle, it always helps me

To sip and relax with a big cup of steeped tea.

Hot tea, the universal comforter, a cup of tea soothes to no end when you are troubled, in shock or just needing a lift for the start of the day. Being a tea drinker I surely did enjoy this poem. Wish I were there with you to have a cuppa.

I love folk songs, they are the psalms of simple people close to the land and their maker. This is lovely, Felix. Imagine all the people brought together over a cup of tea through the generations. Makes me think of my paternal grandmother(Wilson clan)and the way she made me feel special by offering me tea and cream in a beautiful porcelin cup. Ty...Lin

Sounds like you and me had a similar, "rural" extended-family upbringing, Felix, where the warmth and mellowsness of hearth and home and close family relations made everyone feel secure in the strength of the network. (Well, my own experience was a little mixed, to say the least, but I can see in principle what I'm suggesting here...) And the steeped tea is such an anchor of all that. You sound positively British! A strong and evocative write that sows in the feel-good of the nostalgia, and doubtless fuelled by a hot mug of the hard stuff that you talk about! Wunderbar, Felix! I take mine intravenously... LOL Kate xx PS - had difficulty accessing this last night, plus a few other pages? Was that just me?
