Terminal Vigil

My 87 year old mother in law is in the hospital being treated as a terminal patient and as I waited with my wife and her family these were just a few of the thoughts that went through my mind, I may be away for a day or two but I will be back...

Terminal Vigil

White hair feathered on a hospital pillow

Eyes squeezed shut in terror’s grip

Morphine has released her mind to rest

To await that one last heavenward trip

Tears and family circle the wagons

Past wrongs and sins now forgiven

Hugs and kisses are the password now

Tomorrow is another day for the living

Minutes to hours, night to day

Her bedside vigils kept with dread

Oh please if she must go on ahead

Let her slip away sleeping in her bed

The doctor’s prognosis is terminal

She requested no resuscitate

God gave her eighty seven good years

Now it’s up to him and fate

Good night sweet angel mother of many

Float on up on your angel wings

We’ll see you in the clouds above

Hear you when the robins sing!

I'm still content to read about termnal illness, grief and illnesses. Can relate very well to them. I just need to read words like these sometimes and most of the time they help comfort me too. They say life is for the living not the Dead, but I know the dea go on living somewhere pleasant and wait for us.

To my dear brother Felix.

My prayers are with you, Deb and her mom. Wish I could be with you at this time. You make sure to take time to take care of your own health and Deb. We want and need you to be around for a long time to come.
The feelings you express in Terminal Vigil, we as a family, have experienced all too often over the years with the pasting of our parents and brothers. The hurt never gets easier to bare with each pasting, but rest assured that the love and caring of your family is always present.

Lov ya, miss ya,

your little bro,

John

Poignant and so well-expressed, Felix. I wait and watch with you and pray that she will soon know peace of body, mind, soul and spirit. My own mother is 87 and is almost visibly "fading" in physical strength, though her spirit is just as strong and radiant. It is funny how, in the natural course of things, witnessing the ageing process prepares the way for the understanding and acknowledgement of our body's mortality. Love the sentiments expressed here which also ease the parting - "Tears and family circle the wagons Past wrongs and sins now forgiven Hugs and kisses are the password now Tomorrow is another day for the living" - so much life and death in these words, a rite of passage almost. A very sad but healing write, Felix, and all the more courageous being "on the spot" and "in the moment". May there be many clouds and robins singing to accompany her passing through. Bless you and thank you so much for your mailing, received with love and gratitude. I will treasure it always. BTW, my mother's name is Edna!! Unusual, no?! LOL Kate xx

The hardest part is the waiting and watching the loved one slip farther away from us. They are only starting their heavenly trip to be in a place of beauty, with not pain, only love. It was once said that death is like a rose wilting and dying, only to bloom again in a new season. My prayers are with you and your family. I'm sure that you can feel the love of the friends at AD, adding their support for your and your family. Karen

The good is oft interred in our bones, it is said. May she find the true peace that awaits in heaven with our Lord and Savior. Wonderful tribute Felix.
