Salt Box Retirement

Ahh the old ways dissappear and are replaced by the new, still...sad sometimes when you see the end of an era.

The old fisherman sits on a discarded salt box

on a pier at the end of the world he knew

He sit's there lost in the fog of time

an image of dignity through and through

His weathered old pipe, his patched coveralls

his frayed and faded red shirt

seem quaint for the tourist soul stealers

They take pictures of such a good sport

laugh lines surrounding his weary eyes

skin salt-weathered as the boots on his feet

He whittles with his knive for the wee ones

dolphins and whales he gives kids he meets

but he watches the ship traffic with one eye

dreams of days of his glorius past

when he sailed a three master on the Grande Banks

wonders all new why those days couldn't last

I think what inspires us about yesterday is that it was the days of our youth, that fleeting stage in our lives when we thought we had a tiger by the tail and enough energy, intelligence and strength to tame him. As we mature, we see the world though the eyes of experience and we no longer believe is such fantasies, except where they remain trapped in the memories of yesterday. Wonderful writing, Felix, I really enjoyed this piece.
Take care,
Sherry

Very poignant, very revealing, and very wonderful. Why indeed couldn't yesterday last? Let me be 18 forever, and I will have no regrets. Thnx for sharing Felix. May the Lord Jesus Bless you, and those whom you love, and be with you always, and at your side constantly. With much love in my heart, maybe too stubborn for my own good, joy to the world, peace on earth, & ((((((((((MANY WONDERFUL SISTERLY HUGGGGSSSS)))))))))), your still very sad and very terrified little sister, Barbie

My grandfather was a fisherman from Brittany, France; I can well imagine that of which you write here, Felix. There is no doubt as to the sadness expressed and it is legitimate. Love and peace to you,

Thank heavens for those tall ship excursions. I would love to take one sometime. Displacement. We all fear it to some degree, others live it.
Insightful the way you explained it and how. Good work.

A 100 years from now we will probably look pretty prime evil as medicine expands and cures diseases that have no cure today. We always will have to give way as we advance in all fields.
