It was not my neighbourhood as a note of inteterest but a military living quarters adjacent to it that is now shut down and fenced in to avoid vandals. However I did see all the things I wrote of including the boarded up church that really made me feel kind of sad that whole generations lifes had passed through there for so long.

God Don't Live Here Anymore

I took a drive to my old neighborhood today

Took a drive to revive forgotten memories

Turns out the old neigbourhood is closed down

Not much left but empty homes and old oak trees

Still I drove around this ghostly village

Saw the playground and the old ball field

Seen the school and seen the skating rink

Seen the place on Sundays where we'd kneel

I stopped the car a moment, my heart skipped a beat

To see boards covering the windows and the door

A sign said "Keep out...no tresspassing!"

It was the grafitti though, that hurt me to the core

Below it on the weathered plywood was wrote

God don't live here anymore!

My old neighborhood in growing up was near an air force housing development too. My Father had a store across from it. Now apartment complex is there and old housing units are long torn down.
It is nice to go back to the neighborhood though and my house where I was born is still there too. Nice memories were made in the past and need to be reunited with us at times. Keeps us going and realizing that God is in comtrol too in our lives.

So it's true that we can never really go home again? Yes, I have tried it and it's never the same but at least you did it. And you wrote about it for us to enjoy and reflect on our own memories of when we tried to go back home again. It's good that you start people thinking, feeling and remembering...........love from Meredith

God may not live in that old church any more but he lives on forever in the hearts of those how do believe. It is sad to see churches of all things closed and boarded up. But as long as the people believe in their heart then things will be okay.

this is such a sad write

I seek out God from time to time... I too ran across an old hometown church only to find it boarded up minus the graffiti but still it hurt and saddened me to know that people throw such things out and away

Ah, so very powerful, that last line is such a stark reality brutally displayed. Outstanding poetry.
