Dante's Demon's Night

Just musing on some of the things I see working and driving the streets of a city at night...

Dante’s Demon’s Night

Stillness shattered by the flashing lights on street corners, blinking signals that no one sees, cars drive as if the law no longer applies in the three o’clock world of loners, drivers, perverts, and whores

I drive my sleek black car for the crumbs of cash that dribble from rich man’s billfolds and I see the cabbies do the same; a black and white cruiser ignores the girl’s standing on their corner night to night

Houses all in darkness, businesses shut down, the fluorescence of a corner chain store the only reminder that life exists for those in the washed out lamp post light who too often lose their souls to drugs insight

Past four in the morning even the titty-bars shut down to pour the last dregs and perverts onto the damned claimed nighttime streets

Where another father’s child for a twenty or a ten is used, abused, accused and refused to ever walk again the town in the warmth of afternoons delight

In the doorways and the boxes, in the parks and in the gutters the homeless and the winos too, sip their candy from a bottle that they gave their last hope too

Now in fear they clutch it to their sunken chests, blurred blood shot eyes are always searching through the emptiness of time long lost

Like all the other inhabitants of the four in the morning invisible dimension that hides in the ebony of non-day planet they paid the cost

Night to night I drive the streets and night to night my heart grows cold

Night to night compassion fades just a little as I feel myself grow old

Eyes don’t see as they first did the tortured souls of Dante’s demon’s  night

More and more I fear I’ll lose my soul and stop believing what is right.

If YOU ever lose your soul and stop believing what is right, then this world is in more trouble than we ever imagined! But, we are sure that you will not lose your soul, and we might be safe, a little longer.

You portray the stark realism of what is and cannot be ignored, Felix. Thank you. Love and peace to you,

Dearest Felix
I believe you'll never lose your soul and stop believing what is right!! Strongly! I also agree with Susan below:
Here's a great quote I've placed in my auto.

‘It true that one cannot always be positive. At such times one may retire from one’s associates. But as you evolve so your contact becomes more powerful than the influence of the other person. Therefore the other person receives more benefit from you, while the harm you receive is less. If by receiving a little harm you are able to do more good to the other person, it is just as well. It is only a matter of self-discipline, and love can conquer all things. In every person, however wicked, there is a good string somewhere; you must know where to find it. If one always thought about it, one could always touch the best point of the other person and overlook the other points. Nevertheless, it is a struggle.’
~ Sufi poet Hazrat Inayat Khan

For every soul out walking there is some light deep within. I can't give up on anyone. The naked streets come alive after midnight in big cities. It always amazes me that the night walkers come out with the rats that scramble the streets for salvation.

It doesn't matter what the night brings...the skycrapers in the sunlight are full of the same. I know each and everyone has a pssibility for change. With your heart you needn't worry about a thing.

great night visuals...just as eerie as it is.

Felix,
This is one of those I can say, "Gee, wish I'd of written this" This is just oh so good.
The imagery this illuminates is so alarmingly clear. Streets at night hold so many secrets..so many heartaches..not only for those that entertain them..but also for those that are at home, waiting on them to return.
Great write Felix!

Lisa
