A Lifetime of War
I was a child after World War II
Played war games with sticks for guns and rocks for grenades
We always won and the “Japs” and “Krauts” always lost
Collected baseball cards with war scenes…bloodier were best
My father, a veteran, only shook his head slowly he’d paid the cost
I was a teenager during Vietnam
A Canadian who watched the body counts on the nightly news
We wore peace symbols, grew long hair, expressed anti-war views
Watched the hero soldiers treated with disrespect holding the flag aloft
John Lennon sang “Give Peace A Chance”, our father’s said we were too soft
I was a young man during the cold war
Didn’t have much affect on me except the Ruskies were all evil
They would rape and pillage all, our troops must be strong not feeble
Buttons hovered over the end of life, military budgets fattened daily
As politicians gestured grandly over veteran’s parades so gaily
I was a middle aged man during Desert Storm
I readied our ships to go to sea as I watched a war unfold before me on TV
Seen a line of tanks, a wave of jets, oilfields burning far as the eye could see
Again we called our soldiers hero’s brought them home to ticker tape parade
News reports we had won, not much fanfare over the dead bodies that had paid
Now I’m a senior and they say
All out war is looming very near, time to enlarge the graveyards again
More mothers’ sons and this times daughters too will get to share the pain
The presidents call to war has been pre-told, this world once more insane
I look back and see dead bodies everywhere, then just hang my head in shame.

An eye-opening, thought provoking write; sadly, very well penned.
(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
Pray for peace
We watch the tyrants rise to power, we watch them rage their wars but in the end my friend we also watch them fall from their thrones of evil into their own destruction. Hope remains as long as we the people stand together in love and faith. Hope is alive! Live in faith. :)
God bless you, Felix
Your head should be high for calling for peace

I, too, hang my head in shame :(!
