In the quaint town of Shelburne
Here’s what the daily paper read
“Our Boys Will All Be Heroes”
In smaller letters…
"Thirty-two reported dead"
The war for God and country
Saw almost every loyal son
Step forward with their hands up
They knew freedom must be won
Boys who never held a gun
Were sent to the foreign land
Sweet innocence of youth
Boldly they would take a stand
They were shot dead on the beaches
Some shot down in the sky
Sank in ships upon the oceans
Still few stopped to question why
Then one day it all was over
For the village’s men of might
Of the thirty eight men enlisted
Thirty-two died that fateful night
The mothers, wives and daughters
Loyally gathered through the years
At the town monument of granite
Washed gray in memory’s tears
Names listed all in order
Fading it seems a crime
"Here Lies Shelburne’s Heroes"
In smaller letters…
"Remembered for all time…"
Couple of minutes silence for the diggers..

Thanks,
I appreciate the poems you write each year for remembrance of our War dead and for the Veterans. Dad would be pleased. I'd like to have this read on Remembrance Day here at the Millet Legion, if you don't have a problem with that.
Love as always,
Your younger, good looking brother,
